Benjamin Banneker (November 9, 1731 October 9, 1806) was a free African American almanac author, surveyor, naturalist and farmer. Born in Baltimore County, Maryland, to a free African American woman and a former slave, Banneker had little formal education and was largely self-taught. He is known for being part of a group led by Major Andrew Ellicott that surveyed the borders of the original District of Columbia, the federal capital district of the United States. Banneker's knowledge of astronomy helped him author a commercially successful series of almanacs. He corresponded with Thomas Jefferson, drafter of the United States Declaration of Independence, on the topics of slavery and racial equality. Abolitionists and advocates of racial equality promoted and praised his works. Although a fire on the day of Banneker's funeral destroyed many of his papers and belongings, one of his journals and several of his remaining artifacts are presently available for public viewing. Parks, schools, streets and other tributes have commemorated Banneker throughout the years since he lived. However, many accounts of his life exaggerate or falsely attribute his works. 18th Century The Black Past: Remembered and Reclaimed Elizabeth Freeman was born into slavery in Claverack New York in 1742 During the 1770s she lived in the household of Colonel John Ashley of Sheffield a prominent Slavery and the Making of America Timeline PBS SLAVERY AND THE MAKING OF AMERICA is a production of Thirteen/WNET New York 2004 Educational Broadcasting Corporation All rights reserved African-American history - Wikipedia African-American history is the branch of American history that specifically discusses the African-American or Black American ethnic groups in the United States Black Heritage Series - American Philatelic Society Created for free use in the public domain American Philatelic Society 2009 stampsorg Black Heritage Series Creaateted dfofr frreeeeee uuse in nn thtthhe Leonard C Bailey (1825-1905) Inventor of the Folding Bed In celebration of Black History Month the City of Maricopa would like to share with you the stories of African Americans who have made significant contributions to Banneker Benjamin (1731-1806) The Black Past Benjamin Banneker free black farmer mathematician and astronomer was born on November 9 1731 the son of freed slaves Robert and Mary Bannaky probably near the Chronology of Important Events in African American History Timeline of Important Events in African American History in Loudoun County Virginia by Eugene Scheel A Waterford historian and mapmaker The Mis-Education of the Negro - History Is A Weapon Preface HEREIN are recorded not opinions but the reflections of one who for forty years has participated in the education of the black brown yellow and white races Famous Black Mathematicians - Buzzle Famous Black Mathematicians Whom the World Can't Thank Enough Time has witnessed many well-known mathematicians who have come up with interesting new discoveries in Publication 354 - African Americans on Stamps Publication 354 - African Americans on Stamps AFRICAN AMERICANS ON STAMPS A CELEBRATION OF AFRICAN-AMERICAN HERITAGE Publication 354 / January 2004
